Marvin Hagle's secret fear

Marvin Hagler remembers how it was “I had the security of love,” says the world middleweight champ, “but never the security of a few dollars laying around. Security is what anyone wants. The main objective in boxing is to make as much money as you can.” Until recently, as much as Marvin Hagler could make was not much. Fighters with a lot less ability made a lot more. Hagler had to take cut purses sometimes just to get fights but he kept winning and remembers what his co-managers Goody and Pat Petronelli told him back in the early days. Even then, the Petronellis felt they had an uncommon fighter on their hands. “When I started winning pro fights, I'd get maybe $50, but Pat and Goodie wouldn't take a nickel,” Hagler recalls. “They'd just laugh and say, 'Someday, we'll all make money together.'”
