Joey Giardello - "I turned my back on the mob"

Today, more than a quarter of a century after it happened, former middleweight champion Joey Giardello is reluctant to even give the barest of details of the fix attempt on which he turned his back. But he discussed recently after he was stung by the fuss made over Jake La Motta following the release of the movie about his life, “Raging Bull”. Jake Lamotta took a bribe and a dive; Joey Giardello didn't-yet in the strange world we live in Lamotta and his motion picture are the rage. Giardello's psyche seems offended by that, particularly since he declined to do a movie that certainly would have included the jail term he served. “John Mecom (the owner of the NFL's New Orleans Saints) had a film company,” Giardello says. “I coulda done a movie. Frankie Avalon wanted to play me. I didn't want to do it. What could it be about? It'd be about jail. And they wanted to put a lotta women in it.
