Sergey Kovalev looks to face Adonis Stevenson, not Bernard Hopkins

WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20KOs) brushed off the trash talk of IBF champion Bernard Hopkins. Kovalev is coming off the biggest win of his career, a fourth round TKO of previously undefeated Nathan Cleverly. Kovalev is likely going to make his first defense of the title in November. One possible opponent, althought it remains to be seen if it could be finalized before the end of the year - is WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, if he beats Tavoris Cloud next month. Because Hopkins and Kovalev fight on rival cable networks, the Russian fighter doesn't see the two of them being able to fight for some time.

The two punchers will collide on September 7th at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. The NABO and WBC International heavyweight titles will be at stake. I don't talk a lot and do a lot of name-calling, but I knew that this was a possible fight, a fight in the making. It just so happened that it came together. It's a great fight for the fans, it's a great fight for the heavyweight division," Mitchell said to BoxingScene.com.

Julio Cesar Chavez jr discusses fights with Martinez, Golovkin, Ward, Bika

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will make his return to the ring after a one year hiatus as he will take on the always tough Brian Vera at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The weight for the fight has been changed a few times and it will now take place at the Super Middleweight limit of 168 pounds. Originally the fight was scheduled for September 7th but due to a cut suffered by Chavez during training camp, the bout was postponed 3 weeks. Many questioned out loud if the real reason for the postponement was Chavez’s struggle to make weight despite him putting out a photograph of his cut getting stitched up.

Floyd Mayweather Sr thinks Floyd would defeat Adrien Broner

Floyd Mayweather Sr., father and co-trainer of WBC welterweight king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs), does not have a high opinion of WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 24KOs). Experts often compare Mayweather and Broner, because of their in-ring styles and very talkative personalities. The two fighters, who are friendly with each other, are both managed by Al Haymon. Because they are now in the same division, fans and experts are equally interested in seeing the two of them face each other in the ring.

It’s almost as if Oscar De La Hoya is getting a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. That’s how much a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez upset Sept. 14 in Las Vegas would mean to De La Hoya both personally and professionally. Throughout the buildup toward the biggest fight of Alvarez’s career, De La Hoya has made sure to relay as much invaluable advice to the young Mexican star as possible. All Access Mayweather Canelo Premiere

Showtime continues to go all in with its coverage of “The One” pay-per-view extravaganza between Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, which takes place September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Saturday night featured the premiere of the four-part “All Access” series dedicated to the event. The prologue takes us back to the most in-ring achievements of both fighters. The first scene reveals the final moments of Mayweather’s dominant points win over Robert Guerrero this past May. “Still undefeated…” is belted out by Hall-of-Fame ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr as Mayweather picks up the 44th win of his career, now unbeaten through 17 years as a prizefighter “Right now I just can’t be beat,” insists Mayweather, a statement both with merit and without much room for debate.

Santa Cruz becomes a two-division beltholder. Santa Cruz had Terrazas on the backfoot in the very first round. Terrazas was fighting back hard, but getting hit often in the process. In the second, the right eye of Terrazas was swelling shut from the incoming punches and there were plenty of them landing.

Kubrat Pulev decisions Tony Thompson

Schwerin, Germany - In an IBF final eliminator, Tony Thompson (38-4, 26KOs) was coming off back to back knockout victories over highly regarded David Price, but his momentum wasn't enought to overcome the talented up and comer Kubrat Pulev (18-0, 9KOs). The scores were 116-112, 118-110 and 117-111 for Pulev. The Bulgarian heavyweight is now in line for the winner of October's title fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin.

Oscar De La Hoya "Canelo will become a legend!"

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya believes that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) beating Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) would be the most important win in Mexican boxing history - even more so than Julio Cesar Chavez's dramatic stoppage of Meldrick Taylor in the closing seconds of the twelfth round. Canelo will defend his WBC/WBA 154-pound titles against Mayweather on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Lucas Matthysse "Danny Garcia will crumble"

Junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32KOs) is predicting that WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16KOs) will eventually fold from the power-punching pressure. Matthysse is planning a two-fisted assault on Garcia when they face each other on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Garcia has a good chin, but Matthysse says it will crack once the punch start landing. "Once I start putting my hands on Garcia, I'm positive that he won't be able to take it. I have full confidence that I'm going to win. I'm not worried about the referee or the judges, nothing is worrying me," said Matthysse during a radio appearance in Argentina.

Joel Diaz "Bob Arum wants Bradley to lose!"

As the Oct. 12 Tim Bradley-Juan Manuel Marquez pay per view showdown approaches us, there is some noticeable tension in the air. A visibly discouraged Bradley spoke on his concerns with me earlier this month pertaining to the drug testing protocols that are being used in advance of the bout. While initially seeking to have either VADA or USADA drug testing enforced, Bradley was thrown for a loop when he discovered that his promoter and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum instead had plans of using a third party agency in cooperation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to oversee the testing.

Jhonny Gonzalez "This will be a total war"

Abner Mares is looking forward to putting his unbeaten record on the line when he makes the first defence of his WBC featherweight title against Jhonny Gonzalez in Carson, California on Saturday night. Mexican Mares became a three-weight champion when he stopped Daniel Ponce De Leon in the ninth round of their title fight in April. And with a solitary draw blotting an otherwise perfect 27-fight pro career, Mares goes into the clash against former champion Gonzalez a heavy favorite. However, the 27-year-old has full respect for the challenger, who made four successful defenses of the belt before losing to Ponce De Leon.

Price's trainer picks Kubrat Pulev over Tony Thompson

Once again BoxNation, the Channel of Champions, delivers genuine world class action live to its subscribers from Schwerin, Germany this weekend with the heavyweight collision between unbeaten former European champion Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria and veteran Washington DC dangerman Tony Thompson. The 12 round showdown is effectively a final eliminator for the IBF title currently in the custody of Wladimir Klitschko. Mandatory challenger Pulev, 32, a former medallist at both the European and World amateur championships and now victorious in 17 straight as a pro, enters as a 4-1 on betting favourite. However, he will be acutely aware of the carnage that the 41 year old Yankee southpaw can wreak. The fourth ranked 'Tiger' is fresh off a brace of conclusive stoppage wins against reigning British and Commonwealth king David Price – both times whilst operating out of the away corner.

Juan Reyes and Jonathan Arellano war for a draw

Juan Reyes and Jonathan Arellano spent eight grueling rounds trying to outdo one another. Punch for punch or knockdown for knockdown, Reyes and Arellano let it all out on the line. When it was all said and done, a draw seemed the most fitting end to this grueling fight. Reyes and Arellano fought to an eight round majority decision draw before a vocal crowd at the Omega Products International in Corona, CA. The bout headlined a five-bout “New Blood” card, presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions.

Mike Tyson the Promoter

Alcoholic. Suicidal. Abuser. Rapist. “Bite his ear!” Mike Tyson has heard it all throughout his life. And you know what? He will probably hear it more until a higher power decides he will no longer be amongst us on Earth. While there are people who tend to look at the glass half-empty in regards to Tyson, isn’t it about time people to move on from that? No? Well, that is your thing. I have already moved on. While people still think Tyson deserves to have things go bad in his life, I already accepted the fines, jail time, and bans he has faced throughout his life.

Sergio Martinez to return in 2014

ablo Sarmiento, the trainer of WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs), expects his fighter to return in March or April of next year. Martinez suffered several injuries during April's twelve round unanimous decision victory over British contender Martin Murray. Pablo says there have been zero discussions regarding Sergio's next opponent. The biggest fight for Sergio in 2014 will IBO/WBA champion Gennady Golovkin - if he defeats Curtis Stevens in November.

Floyd Mayweather Sr "Broner has fought stiffs!"

Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. says several fighters have tried to copy the fighting style of his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr. The most recent fighter to box in a Mayweather-like manner is WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 24KOs). Floyd Sr. says Andre Berto attempted to copy the Mayweather style and suffered heavy consquences in the ring. The vocal trainer expects Broner to suffer the same fate when he faces a real opponent. "Another one it's going to happen to, as soon as he gets the right man in his face, is Broner. Broner, so far, so good. He's doing it the best of anyone else that's did it. But then, also, he's had stiffs in front of him. He hasn't had no real fighter in front of him, man," Mayweather Sr. told writer David Mayo.

Gennady Golovkin vs Curtis Stevens

Middleweight contender Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18KOs) is very confident WBA/IBO champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs) will regret his decision to sign their bout agreement for November 2nd at The Theater in Madison Square Garden. He wants to place himself in a top middleweight position by taking Golovkin out in the fall.

According to a BoxingScene.com report from Rene Umanzor last week, Saul Alvarez’s manager Eddy “Chepo” Reynoso is claiming that his man has been doing tremendous damage to his sparring partners in advance of his Sept. 14 clash with Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas. Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez had the following to say after speaking with Chepo about Canelo’s camp in Big Bear, Calif. “He told me [Canelo] already knocked off four sparring partners. We’ve already changed eight or nine people and just [sent] him another from Philadelphia. I’ve never seen him like this. One of the sparring partners broke a rib, two other were injured, one of them injured a shoulder and another was knocked out.”

The Lost Art of rope fighting

OVERNIGHT Muhammad Ali sprang a rope trick as baffling as any ever sprung by an Indian fakir. And George Foreman, trapped as anybody tranfixed by the whine of the pipes and the stare of the beady-eyed snake, eventually fell over. The end was his rude awakening as former heavyweight champion—and Ali's song of joy at paradise regained. The name of the game was rope-fighting. To Ali, it was a new gimmick, born of the ingenuity of his 32 years of age and 14 years in the ring. To students of ye olde art of the fistic it was nothing new. It was the best dodge of the game, a way of fighting to let the other fellow burn up energy while you look for a spot to unleash your punching power economically.

Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32KOs), the interim-junior welterweight champion of the World Boxing Council ( WBC ), has two objectives in view - to become the best pound for pound in the world and steal the night on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas . Matthysse will challenger full WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16KOs) on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez undercard. Matthysse hopes that a victor over Garcia will land him the opportunity to fight Mayweather next. "I'm the best in the division and I can prove it by winning this fight. I'm looking to be the best pound for pound in the world. I have no doubt that I can end his undefeated run. I feel physically and mentally prepared. I know he's a good fighter, but I am confident that I will overcome him. He's had good fights, but I've fought many good opponents. Hopefully I can win by knockout and get the best win of the evening," Matthysse said.

Kovalev (22-0-1, 20KOs) dropped Cleverly four times before the fight was stopped. Stevenson returns on September 28th against former champion Tavoris Cloud. Kovalev also plans to fight in the fall. Muhammad Ali "My Ten Toughest Opponents"

CAN FRANK SINATRA name his ten favorite songs? Could a child list his ten favorite candy bars? Can Jim Brown rattle off his ten toughest football games? And make those lists in order of preference? I doubt it. At least not without changing the lists many times over. I guess I have been asked to name "my toughest fights" at least a hundred times. And I have probably come up with almost as many different replies. It's difficult because I consider all of my fights tough and all of my opponents worthy. Until this time, I don't think I've ever had to sit down and give it thought. Running true to form, if you asked me the same question next week, my list might change again. I've had too many milestones in my career to possibly think of picking fights on their importance. There was probably no bigger challenge in my career than the one that George Foreman posed in Kinshasa, Zaire. Strangely, although regaining my crown will remain one of my greatest thrills, it wasn't one of my

Robert Garcia "Pacquiao is not what he was"

Robert Garcia, trainer of Brandon Rios, has noticed a physical decline in eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao. Rios challenges Pacquiao on November 23rd in Macau, China. Garcia trained Antonio Margarito for his 2010 clash with Pacquiao, which took place at a catch-weight of 150-pounds. Margarito took a bad beating in the fight and lost a lopsided twelve round decision. During the fight, Margarito suffered a bad orbital bone injury and it led to his career coming to close. "We're going to prepare for the best Pacquiao, that same one from four years ago, that's the Pacquiao that we are going to prepare for. [But] there are little things that I've been noticing in his last two or three fights... he does not have the same strength and his legs are suffering from cramps.........[possibly the affects of] age, punishment in the gym. There are things that nobody can hide. It happen to athletes, boxers and there is nothing you can do [about it]," Garcia said.

Sergey Kovalev blows away Nathan Cleverly

Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales - In a career defining performance, Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20KOs) stopped previously undefeated Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12KOs) in four rounds to capture the WBO light heavyweight crown Kovalev, who knocked out most of his opponents within three rounds, came out throwing heavy shots in the first round. Kovalev hurt Cleverly badly in the third round, dropping him twice and nearly finishing him off. Kovalev picked things right back up in the fourth, throwing bombs to send Cleverly down for a third time and the referee waved things off. Many thought Kovalev had that mixture of fundamental skills and tremendous punching power that could fire up a new star in boxing. In many eyes, The Krusher even exceeded their expectations by completely annihilating Cleverly in four. Atlantic City, New Jersey - Kiko Martinez put pressure on Jhonatan Romero from the opening seconds of the opening round and never turned it off. Romero tried in vain to keep Martinez away but ultimately failed, losing his junior featherweight title by a sixth-round technical knockout. Referee David Fields halted the onslaught 2 minute sand 40 seconds into the round. His mercy was necessary. Martinez, a fighter with four losses on his record who had never before fought for a world title, attacked Romero’s body relentlessly and sent hard haymakers upstairs. A wild right hand and a left hook hurt Romero early in the first round, with plenty of that stanza remaining. CompuBox credited Martinez with landing 40 of 88 power punches in the first three minutes of the fight, while Romero was just 8 of 34. Darren Barker upsets Daniel Geale

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The lesson was his blessing, but it was also nearly his undoing. Darren Barker had fought the middleweight champion and lost, bloodying Sergio Martinez but ultimately suffering an 11th-round knockout. It was his first pro defeat, but it also served as a confidence booster. He had stood in with the best, and so when he returned to the ring 14 months later he was aggressive — and successful. Barker scored a technical knockout over Kerry Hope in December 2012, scored a stoppage of Simone Rotolo in March, neither fight going past four rounds. Those victories landed him a shot at world titleholder Daniel Geale. His fan-friendly approach put him into an entertaining fight, and it nearly put him down for the count. In the sixth round, as Barker and Geale exchanged much like they had done for the previous 15 minutes of action, Geale laced a left hook to the body. Barker dropped to the canvas and looked as if he would stay there, rising to all fours only by

John Mugabi a look back at his win over Frank Fletcher

It was during the 1980 Olympics and British promoter/manager Mickey Duff was watching some of the boxing on the telly in his London flat. The fact that a 19-year-old Ugandan welterweight named John Mugabi was blasting away most of the opposition did not escape Duff's eyes. After three KO wins, Mugabi then won a decision to land a spot in the gold medal round against the experienced Cuban southpaw, Andres Aldama. Mugabi would lose a 3-2 decisionto the Cuban in Moscow but Duff had seen enough. Duff wanted to sign the Ugandan and wasted no time making it happen. "I thought he was an animal," Duff said, recalling his thoughts while watching Mugabi work. The welterweight would become John Mugabi the junior middleweight. Along the way the nickname "The Beast" would be added although initially Duff was not keen on the name. But after a while it became evident that it fit Mugabi and his ways in the ring rather nicely.

Jimmy Goodrich Forgotten Fighter

For more than seven years, Benny Leonard held a monopoly—a legal monopoly that no court could dissolve - the world lightweight championship. Leonard monopolized the crown simply by being so good that he was unbeatable. But then, in the summer of 1924, seemingly with no more worlds to conquer, Leonard announced his retirement as undefeated titleholder. This set off a scramble among the best 135-pounders in the world for the vacant crown, and a young fighter of Irish-German ancestry, toughened in the steel mills, emerged on top as the successor to Benny Leonard. His name was James Edward Moran, but in the ring he was called Jimmy Goodrich.

Kid Galahad - second coming of prince naseem

Kid Galahad has vowed to give a “master class” when he takes on Jazza Dickens for the British super bantamweight title at the Magna Centre on September 14th, live on Channel 5 from 8.00pm. The WBC International champion accepts Jazza is "dangerous" but feels he is already "the best in Britain" and will show it against the English champion. “He is a good kid but I’m seven or eight levels above him,” Galahad said. “I’m the smartest and definitely the slickest – I’m the slickest for sure. "Jazza is a strong kid - he's physically strong and he can punch but on the night I'm going to be too much for him and it's going to show in the fight." Galahad, 23, has a perfect 14-0 record with seven knockouts and has already drawn comparisons to former Ingle Gym stable mate and former world champion Prince Naseem Hamed. But 22-year-old Dickens will certainly not make it an easy night for Kid.

Andre Berto On the shelf until 2014

Andre Berto (Winter Haven, Fla.) underwent successful surgery with highly-respected physician, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles to repair a ruptured subscapularis tendon in his right shoulder. Dr. ElAttrache declared the surgery a success following the three and a half hour operation, during which he discovered that Berto had completely torn the tendon from top to bottom. Dr. ElAttrache declared the surgery a success following the three and a half hour operation, during which he discovered that Berto had completely torn the tendon from top to bottom. During his post operative visit with Berto, he explained that the severity of the tear prevented him from being able to punch with any type of power with his right hand as well as fully lift his arm to protect himself from incoming punches. Foreman "Canelo by ko in 9!"

Former heavyweight champion George Foreman appeared on ATG Radio and discussed the upcoming mega-match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs), scheduled to take place on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Foreman gives Canelo a huge shot to pull off the upset. He doesn't see any possible way that Mayweather is capable is doing damage on Canelo. Mayweather has only scored two stoppage victories since 2006, against Hatton and a controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz in 2011. "Alvarez, this is his fight to lose. I'll put it to you like this - he's younger,

Darren Barker "This is for my brother"

DARREN BARKER will fight to keep alive his brother Gary’s memory when he challenges Daniel Geale for the world middleweight title this weekend. Barker admits he nearly hung up his gloves a year ago The Londoner admits he nearly hung up his gloves a year ago after an arm injury forced him to pull out of a fight. And that came after his brother was killed in a car accident at the age of 19 in December 2006. But the 31-year-old insists he is now in prime condition to win the IBF belt in Atlantic City in the early hours of Sunday thanks to yoga, meditation and training in a swimming pool. Sergey Kovalev "Cleverly will find out why I'm called the 'Krusher'"

NATHAN CLEVERLY has been warned of the dangers of getting involved in a toe-to-toe battle with KO specialist Sergey Kovalev. Cleverly makes the sixth defence of his WBO light-heavyweight title against the big-punching Russian, at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on Saturday night. And Kovalev’s trainer John David Jackson, a former two-weight world champion himself, believes the Welshman is likely to become his man’s latest quick-fire victim. Kovalev has put 19 of his 21 victims out on the canvas and Jackson is convinced Cleverly will be No.20. He said: “Sergey can match Nathan for boxing – but no way can Nathan match Sergey’s punching power. “If Cleverly’s dumb enough to stand with us, he’ll get knocked out. Once Sergey lands a big punch, I expect Nathan to go on the retreat and attempt to outbox us off the back foot. “He talks about having Plans A to Z but, come Saturday, he’ll have just one plan – survival mode. He won’t stave off Sergey by flicking jabs.

Bermane Stiverne is upset that Vitali Klitschko has not been stripped

OTTAWA, Canada -The latest ruling by the World Boxing Council (WBC), allowing its heavyweight champion, Vitali "Dr. Ironfist" Klitschko (45-2, 41 KOs), to avoid fighting No. 1 mandatory challenger Bermane "B. Ware" Stiverne (23-1, 20 KOs), has drawn anger from an increasingly frustrated Team Stiverne. Stiverne has already won not one, but two WBC title eliminators, the latest against Chris Arreola (35-3, 30 KOs) on HBO this past April 27, and three different mandated purse bids have been postponed. Now, the WBC has announced that the 42-year-old Klitschko has suffered an injury to his right hand and he won't return to the ring until 2014. Plus, the WBC will not make a decision regarding his title situation until the first

Ruslan Provodnikov "WE Will create a war!"

Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov were very respectful of one another Tuesday during a news conference to officially announce their highly anticipated junior welterweight title fight. Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs) and Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs) are well aware, though, that they’re headed toward a night of inevitable brutality that’ll leave one of them way worse for wear Oct. 19 in Broomfield, Colo., near Alvarado’s native Denver. “I can confidently say that we’re both going to create a war,” Provodnikov said, “and I’m pretty sure that one of us is probably going to remain laying in the ring after the fight.” Alvarado and Provodnikov probably will have a tough time topping the stunning slugfest between Provodnikov and Timothy Bradley, which Bradley won by unanimous decision March 16 in Carson, Calif. Though Alvarado boxed more effectively during his rematch against Brandon Rios, their aggressive styles still should make for an all-action battle that prompted promoters t

Arturo Gatti - Micky Ward Legendary Nights Documentary

A fight between Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov on its own is well worth the price of admission and then some. Still, Top Rank and HBO have decided to make the Oct. 19 show in Bloomfield, Colorado an even greater event. Alvarado was recently declared a “full” champion at 140 lb. by the WBO, with the interim title removed on the heels of Juan Manuel Marquez agreeing to challenge Tim Bradley for the 147 lb. belt. The showdown with Provodnikov was already going to happen, but the timing of Alvarado’s recognized championship status gives him home court advantage for his first title defense. Many are expecting the fight to be an instant classic and deep in discussion for Fight of the Year honors. It already has at least three other barnburners to measure up to, two of which include Alvarado and Provodnikov in separate fights. It will now also have to measure up to three more fights, a series of bouts that will be reintroduced to HBO viewers on that same evening.

Daniel Geale "Golovkin hasn' been tested"

IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15KOs) is not convinced about hype revolving around the WBA/IBO's champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs). Geale defends his title this Saturday against Darren Barker in Atlantic City. Golovkin was Geale's mandatory challenger earlier this year, but the Australian boxer took another direction and accepted a more lucrative fight against Anthony Mundine. If Geale wins this weekend, HBO would be very interested in a unification showdown with Golovkin.

Bryan Vera "Chavez Jr is a damn joke!"

"My manager is meeting with HBO about rescheduling so we will see what happens. This kid is a damn joke," Vera explained. The Texas native said that he had been having a very strong training camp and was right on a schedule for the September 7th date. Even though a new date hasn't been determined for the fight, Vera is going to follow through with a planned sparring session tomorrow. "Training has been going real good and I've been getting stronger and better each day. I'll be sparring tomorrow and I hope to hear officially what's going on," Vera told BoxingScene.com. Vera vowed that the postponement won't change the outcome of the fight and said that Chavez will pay the price when the fight gets rescheduled and they finally step in the ring.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr-Brian Vera fight OFF

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has suffered a small cut on his eyelid, likely from a sparring session, and needs at least three weeks to properly heal. As a result, Chavez will not be ready to face Brian Vera in an HBO televised fight on September 7th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Chavez has been training in his hometown of Culiacan under the supervision of Vladimir Baldenebro, Alex Ariza and his father, the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. Chavez's return has been pushed back several times. The young Mexican (46-1-1, 32KOs) has been inactive since last September when he suffered his first career defeat to Sergio Martinez. There has been rumors that Chavez was having issues with weight in his training camp. The bout was initially going to take place at 160, then pushed to 165 and then bumped up to the super middleweight limit of 168.
